Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

LWF Uganda is committed to improving access to clean, safe and affordable water for refugees and host communities, a foundation for food security, health, and dignity.

Water Supply

We increase access to water through:

  • Drilling and rehabilitation of wells and boreholes
  • Expansion of hybrid, motorized water supply systems
  • Water trucking to settlements where needed
  • Training community-based hand pump mechanics for maintenance and repair

Regular water quality and groundwater monitoring is conducted to ensure that all water supplied meets national standards. This also helps us promote the sustainable use of water resources and avoid over-extraction of aquifers.

To ensure ownership and care of water facilities, we strengthen Water User Committees and involve communities in managing water points.

Sanitation and Hygiene

LWF promotes safe sanitation and hygiene practices at the household and community levels. Our work includes:

  • Increasing latrine coverage in refugee settlements and host communities
  • Prioritizing vulnerable households, including Persons with Special Needs, for sanitation support
  • Hygiene promotion through village health teams and trained hygiene promoters
  • Community-led awareness on proper waste disposal, latrine use, and good hygiene practices

Through these interventions, we reduce the spread of waterborne diseases and support healthier, more resilient communities.
