Strengthening Emergency Response and Protection: New Projects Supporting Vulnerable Communities

 

Project name: Increasing Access to Critical Child Protection and Resilience Building Safety Nets for Mpox-Affected Communities

Target: 10,585 vulnerable individuals in Nakasongola, Luweero, Wakiso, Kampala, and Mukono

This project aims to strengthen child protection and resilience in communities affected by Mpox. Key activities include training para-social workers, community development officers (CDOs), and health workers on child protection in emergencies, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention. The project will also provide humanitarian cash transfers (UGX 135,000 per household) to improve the immunity of vulnerable households. Implementation will be in collaboration with government agencies, UN partners, and community structures.

 

Project name: Ebola Early Action: Outbreak Response and Mitigation in Uganda

Consortium Members: Humanity & Inclusion, Plan International, and Christian Aid (LWF is the implementing partner of Christian Aid)
Target: 70 health workers, 260 community health workers, and 6,000 community members in Mbale and Kampala

This project enhances Uganda’s humanitarian preparedness for Ebola outbreaks by improving response capacity, increasing access to MHPSS services, and reducing stigma and discrimination. Key activities include training frontline health workers and strengthening community awareness to mitigate the impact of future outbreaks.

 

Project name : Response to the Sudan Refugee Influx and Scale-Up of PSEA Interventions

Target: Refugees in Kiryandongo, Lamwo, Adjumani, and Yumbe

This project focuses on child protection, MHPSS, GBV, and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) interventions. It will strengthen district and community structures to enhance MHPSS access, provide alternative care and reunification for unaccompanied and separated children (UASC), and improve GBV prevention and response mechanisms for refugee women and children. The project also aims to improve knowledge and attitudes among service providers regarding PSEA.

 

Project name: Emergency Response to DRC Conflict

Funder: ACT Alliance
Budget: UGX 1.757 billion
Duration: March 2024 – March 2026
Implementing Partners: LWF, FCA, HEKS, and Church of Uganda (Consortium)

This ACT Alliance-funded emergency response project supports new arrivals from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 2024 to date. The project provides life-saving humanitarian assistance while strengthening resilience and social cohesion.

Key objectives include:

  • Improving access to food, safe water, hygiene, and sanitation for conflict-affected individuals.
  • Providing emergency relief items such as kitchen supplies, shelter, and dignity kits.
  • Preventing and responding to gender-based violence (GBV).
  • Increasing access bto safe and inclusive primary and secondary education for displaced persons.
  • Enhancing self-reliance through livelihood support initiatives.
  • Promoting peaceful coexistence between refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities.
  • Strengthening information access, feedback mechanisms, and beneficiary engagement.
